  • Growing Practices

Numa Nursery's 'Tampa Bay Moringa' is provided by The Moringa Growers' Co-op, harvested from several locations throughout the Tampa Bay area.

The Moringa Grower's Co-op grows moringa organically on over 300+ properties in the Tampa Bay area. Each moringa tree is raised using all natural growing practices.

The soil is enhanced with plant based compost teas and fertilizing methods using organic plant based food scraps, activated bio-char, azomite rock dust, worm castings, oak mulch and comfrey leaves.

To further reduce pests and strengthen each moringa tree's immunity, sea-90 mineral salts and neem oil are applied to the leaves and root system.

The local moringa trees are harvested by hand according to celestial alignments, during waxing moon cycles, preferably in the A.M. when sap/nutrition is still high and accessible in the leaves and flowers. Ensuring the most amount of nutritional value is harvested.

Then, the moringa greens, flowers, seeds and drumsticks are cleaned and immediately placed in a shaded, humid-free environment, to ensure medicinal properties (Vitamin C) are retained. Local Tampa Bay moringa is processed in an MGC certified organic packaging facility.

Each order of Numa Nursery's Tampa Bay Moringa is arranged by hand in small batches. Thank you for your interest in supporting local.

  • Directions for Use

Moringa Fruit Also known as: ‘drumsticks’

After the small white flowers have been pollinated, seed pods can develop. The very young soft-green stringy seed pods can be eaten fresh, or chopped, which can be very spicy! Thicker seed pods can be cooked and added to soups & sauces. Enjoy!

    Mature seed pods

can hold up to 20+ seeds inside and reach upwards of 2 feet in length. The large seed pods will begin to form brown stripes on the outside, signifying the seeds inside are ripe and can be harvested. Dry the seed pods before opening. Seeds can be cold-pressed by hand to make beneficial oil.  Save some seeds to plant more trees.

"Moringa seeds are obtained from the pods of the Moringa plant (Moringa Oleifera) or the drumstick tree, native to Northern India. Fresh and raw moringa seeds are quite tender, but as soon as they get dried, they become hard and start to resemble small beans. They are greyish-white in colour with unique wing-like structures. They can be steamed, boiled or roasted for various purposes," says Dr. Divya Choudhary, Chief Dietitian, Max Super Speciality Hospital.

According to Dr. Manoj K. Ahuja, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, "Moringa is a nutrient-dense plant that is rich in vitamins, calcium, iron and essential amino acids. It can benefit the body in a number of ways."

Here are several health benefits of consuming moringa seeds:

DISCLAIMER: moringa seeds are very powerful with many medicinal properties. Consult a physician before ingesting.

    4. Can be a Great Source of Iron

"Did you know that a single serving of moringa has almost three times the amount of iron as spinach? This is especially important for vegetarians/vegans or those who suffer from low iron issues, as the body needs iron to enrich the blood and carry oxygen to our muscles, organs and tissues," adds Dr. Choudhary.

    5. Potentially Reduces Joint Pain

Dr. Ashutosh Gautam, Clinical Operations and Coordination Manager at Baidyanath says, "Moringa seeds make for a great supplement of calcium and help those suffering from joint pain. They help in reducing inflammation and severe bone disorders like arthritis."

"Scientists have proved that moringa seeds can reduce the amount of oxidised lipids in our body and take care of our cardiac health by safeguarding the heart tissues from constructional damages," says Dr. Choudhary.

    9. Possible Powerhouse of Antioxidants

"The oil extracted from moringa seeds contains almost 30 antioxidants. It contains vitamins A, B-complex, C and other free radical busters that save our body from severe oxidative damage. In other words, these antioxidant properties of moringa seeds can take care of our overall health", says Dr. Choudhary.

    10. Can Promote Healthy Skin

"Moringa seeds are packed with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties and are thus, very beneficial for skincare. The oil obtained from moringa seeds can be used as a moisturizer or used to treat skin problems like skin rashes and sunburn," says Dr. Ashutosh Gautam, Baidyanath.

    • Fill the inside of a small pot, 3/4 to the top with composted soil (sand, coco coir, azomite, mushroom compost).
    • Place one single seed -centered- inside the pot.
    • Then, cover the seed lightly 1/2" -1" by filling the remainder of the pot with composted soil. The rule of gardening thumb is to cover the seed with as much soil as the seed is big. Example: moringa seeds are roughly 1/2"-1" in diameter, therefore cover the seed lightly with 1/2" to 1" of soil.
    • Keep moist, not soaked, until sprouted, about 2-3 weeks given the time of year. Generally, spring planting gets better germination rates. No extra germination techniques required (wet tissue paper). No shelling the seed before planting required.
    • Plant seeds from February-April in Tampa, FL, but moringa seeds can be planted all year in Florida given the right conditions, whether in a greenhouse or inside or directly in the ground during wet months. Moringa is fromthe desert and can be planted on depleated sandy soils, aka florida soils.
    • Protect potted seedlings from rain drops directly hitting the top of the pot, that may disrupt the soil. Spray misting is an okay practice. Avoid heavy droplets.
    • After the moringa seed has sprouted plant into a larger container or place outside on a *hugel* mound 6"-1' above ground, no digging required. Moringas do not like wet roots and it rains alot in the summer, account for natural sinking, settling over time, water runnoff from buildings, standing water or ditches
    • Plant on the highest ground possible.
    • Cover soil with oak mulch. Keep the stem free from mulch, to prevent fungus build up.
    • Water lightly for 2-3 weeks to get the roots established. Leaves will yellow with over-watering.
    • No further Irrigation required. Moringa is a desert tree and drought tolerant.
    • In winter, cover leaves or cut back the main stem at the first fork 'Y' or even to the goround in severe freeze conditions, to prevent root damage. Moringa is a sub-tropical tree sensitive to cold weather under 50 degrees fahrenheit. Leaves will yellow in cold weather. Protect roots with an extra layer of mulch. The leaves may fall off and the tree may look dead after a freeze, but do not disturb until warmer months return and new shoots will appear to grow from the root base.
